Federal & provincial Jurisdiction
What it is
The Canada Infrastructure Bank lends long-term against pledged project revenue and guarantees a share of project capital. Several provinces separately backstop First Nations equity in energy infrastructure.
Timing
Open now. Provincial programs have their own intake processes.
Who qualifies
- Project with pledgeable, contracted revenue
- First Nations or Indigenous participation for the equity streams
- Scale — most streams start in the millions
- Provincial residence for the provincial programs
What it is worth
- CIB long-term loans, repayment to around 30 years
- BC First Nations Equity Financing: guarantees $5M to $400M, new June 2026
- Alberta AIOC: loan guarantee plus capacity grants; Saskatchewan SIIFC from $5M
Watch out for
- Government funding can stack toward 100% on Indigenous-led projects, but it is assessed project by project
- These lower the cost of capital — the principal is still repaid
- Diligence timelines are measured in months
