What it is

A demand charge is set by a single fifteen-minute interval each month, not by how much you used. In Alberta the transmission and distribution tariffs are the entire business case; elsewhere they sit underneath the programs.

Timing

No window. The saving starts at commissioning, subject to the ratchet.

Who qualifies
  • Any site billed on a demand or capacity charge
  • Interval data for at least twelve months
  • Peaks that are short relative to the billing interval
  • No program approval required
What it is worth
  • AESO Rate DTS, transmission-connected: ~$167,000 – $228,000 per MW-year
  • FortisAlberta Rate 61 and 63: ~$147,000 – $183,000 per MW-year
  • BC and Ontario distribution demand charges stack under the programs
Watch out for
  • The ratchet keeps billing on an old peak for 12 to 24 months
  • Sizing from connected load rather than interval data oversizes the system
  • A short, sharp peak is cheap to shave; a broad plateau is not
