What it is
A yearly competition in which a resource commits to reduce load on the system operator’s call. Payment is for the commitment, not the energy, so a battery earns whether or not it is dispatched.
Timing
Qualification opens 10 September 2026. The auction runs 25–26 November 2026.
Who qualifies
- 1 MW minimum — a single cabinet does not qualify
- Four-hour sustained capability
- Qualification completed before the auction
- Smaller sites can participate through an aggregator
What it is worth
- Roughly $170,000 to $180,000 per MW-year at recent clears
- Revenue is contracted, not weather-dependent
- Stacks with Global Adjustment and demand charges
Watch out for
- The 1 MW floor and four hours together drive a 4 MWh minimum
- Failure to perform on a call carries penalties
- Qualification takes longer than people plan for
