What it is

The AESO procures ancillary services competitively: regulating reserve, spinning and supplemental reserve, and fast frequency response. Battery storage is technically well suited — full output in milliseconds, symmetric in both directions.

  • Grid-forming conversion reaches the fastest products
  • Sustained response over the required window
  • Market participant registration
What it is worth
  • Prices move with system conditions and are not contracted
  • Best treated as upside layered on a tariff-driven case
  • Alberta has no capacity market and no meaningful demand-response program
Watch out for
  • A project underwritten on ancillary revenue alone is not underwritten
  • Cycling for ancillary duty consumes calendar and cycle life
  • Build the Alberta case on Rate DTS and distribution charges first
